Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild- perfect day trip from Nice

The French Riviera is a very special place to me. This was really our first time getting to experience it and we were in awe of the beauty we saw. Walking on the promenade is refreshing, learning the history was so interesting and trying all the local produce was so delicious. But my favourite part? All the architecture.

One of the hidden gems, located just 20 minutes away from Nice, is Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a magnificent pink villa from early 20th century. Before even planning a route through Nice, I had this on my list of must activities. A giant pink palace surrounded by a sea of gardens? Yes, please.Girl sitting on the chair in the garden in front of Villa de Rothschild

How much time should you plan for

Villa looks out over some of the most beautiful houses of Cap-Ferrat that sit along the water, which is littered with yachts and sailboats. It is also one of the most expensive parts of the coastline in terms of real estate, which is dotted with glorious villas of the rich who first discovered the Riviera in the 19th century and found that the climate and scenery were so amazing that they decided to stay. Can’t really blame them…

We have spent about four hours in total exploring the place. The interior of the villa is rather tastefully decorated and wandering around numerous reception rooms gives you a lovely insight of how wealthy people lived during the Belle Epoque. Make sure to go upstairs and enjoy stunning views from the balcony overlooking the main garden and fountains.

Allow yourself plenty of time to explore surrounding gardens. Also every twenty minutes or so, the “musical fountains” move into action accompanied by classical music – I usually find it a little bit cheesy but I have to admit that the effect was rather nice.

Top Tip: I recommend going to Villa Rothschild either first thing in the morning or two hours before it closes. That way there will be the least amount of people and you can have a villa for yourself.

Getting to Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Take the bus number 81 from Port de Saint Jean from the Promenade des Arts bus stop located behind the Place Garibaldi Monoprix. It runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, every 20 minutes on Sundays. The ticket costs only 1.50€ each way and you can pay as you board, or use your day pass/week pass/or discount ten-trip card.

The bus ride takes you along some scenic landscapes of Cote d’Azur. Once you pass the colourful village of Villefranche Sur Mer, you will see a stop called “Plage de Passable”. Villa is a few minutes away by walk.

Top Tip: Busses are crowded but try to sit on the right side of the bus (if you are facing forward). As a result, you will have the most wonderful views throughout the whole journey.
